About Barbara

Chief Purveyor of Change, idea maker, connector, and cat herder extraordinaire.

When she is not helping her clients make the world a better place or volunteering her time, you can find Barbara off on a run, playing with her dog, at the beach, or spending time with friends and family.  She is an aspiring chef and gardener, and loves to be outside.

Barbara Fanning, our chief Purveyor of Change, grew up on the East Coast but found her way to the West Coast shortly after graduating from college. She made a brief stop in San Francisco and then discovered Encinitas (north of San Diego) and she knew she was home. She spent a summer in Durango, Colorado but quickly returned to her roots in Encinitas.

She has a diverse background in marketing, community management, event planning, sustainability and instructional design. She has worked for search engines, ad agencies, in radio and television (I want my MTV) and even a hang gliding school.  She has developed and managed all aspects of communication programs for companies of all shapes and sizes, and industries.

She founded Mindswing in 2007 as a way to share her marketing, communications, and event planning expertise, and passion for sustainability with companies and non-profits making a positive difference in the world.

She is an active member and volunteers with several non-profits and professional groups. She is a Provisional WELL AP, a LEED Green Associate, a member of the USGBC San Diego Chapter  Board of Directors, and serves on the Green Schools Committee.

Barbara graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (Go Rams!) with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications, she holds a Master of Arts from San Diego State University in Education and Learning Design & Technology.  And as a life long learner and educator, she can’t stop learning and has a Certificate in Sustainable Business Practices from University of California, San Diego, thinks MOOCs are awesome, and is a member of Marie Forleo’s B-School tribe.
